In the fourth semester, students following a study pathway that includes the award of the Université Paris 8 degree shall undertake a master’s thesis or, alternatively, an internship, in accordance with the Curriculum and the Special Cooperation Protocol Agreement.
A postgraduate student is entitled to propose a topic once they have successfully completed all courses of the three semesters of their study pathway. At the beginning of the fourth semester, they shall submit an application to the Programme Secretariat stating the proposed thesis title and proposed supervisor, with an abstract of the proposed thesis attached. The Programme Secretariat shall forward the application to the Steering Committee.
11.1. Thesis Supervision
Following an application by the student stating the proposed thesis title and proposed supervisor, with an abstract of the proposed thesis attached, the CC shall appoint the supervisor and constitute a three-member examining committee for approval of the thesis, one member of which shall be the supervisor (Article 82(2), Law 4957/2022).
Teaching staff falling within points (a) to (f) of Article 83(1) of Law 4957/2022 are entitled to supervise theses, provided they hold a doctoral degree. By decision of the Programme’s competent body, thesis supervision may also be assigned to members of the Department’s Teaching and Research Staff (DEP), Special Educational Staff (EEP) and Laboratory Teaching Staff (EDIP) who have not undertaken teaching duties on the Programme (Article 83(3), Law 4957/2022).
The other two members of the three-member Examining Committee may belong to any category of teaching staff eligible to undertake independent teaching duties on the Programme under Article 83 of Law 4957/2022. Members of the three-member Examining Committee must have an academic specialisation identical or related to the subject of the Programme.
In exceptional cases where a supervisor is objectively unable to perform their supervisory duties for a prolonged period, or where another serious reason exists, the CC may, by a reasoned decision, replace the supervisor or a member of the three-member Examining Committee, either following a request by the postgraduate student and the opinion of the proposed supervisor or member, or following a proposal by the supervisor or a member of the three-member Examining Committee.
At the end of the thesis allocation period, the CC shall ratify the allocation of topics to supervisors.
The subject of the master’s thesis must be research-oriented and original. The requirements for writing the master’s thesis shall be specified in a decision of the CC and published on the Programme’s website.
The supervisor is responsible for planning each student’s master’s thesis. The supervisor and postgraduate student are also responsible for ensuring that all postgraduate theses comply with the Institution’s principles of academic integrity and research ethics.
11.2. Language of the Thesis
The master’s thesis shall be written in English.
11.3. Examination of the Master’s Thesis
After completing the writing of the master’s thesis, and with the supervisor’s consent, students shall provide the members of the Examining Committee with a copy in electronic or printed form. The master’s thesis must be submitted to the Committee members at least fifteen (15) days before the beginning of the examination period.
Before the defence, postgraduate students must also submit to the Programme Secretariat a formal declaration stating the following: “I am the author of this Master's Thesis and any assistance I received in its preparation is fully acknowledged and referenced in the work. I have also cited any sources from which I have used data or ideas, whether cited directly or paraphrased. I also certify that this work was prepared by me personally, specifically for this Master's Thesis.”
Approval of the thesis requires its defence before the Examining Committee. The following procedure shall apply:
The three-member Examining Committee shall meet to examine the thesis. It shall be lawfully convened only when all three members are present (Article 14(1), fifth sentence, Law 2690/1999). On the day of the meeting, the three Committee members shall exchange views, put questions to the candidate, then determine the final grade, complete and sign the relevant assessment form and subsequently submit it to the Secretariat. The examination date shall be set by the three-member Committee. Approval of the master’s thesis requires both: a) the agreement of two-thirds (2/3) of the Committee members; and b) an average grade from the three Committee members equal to or greater than five (5). The master’s thesis shall be graded from zero (0.00) to ten (10.00).
Following any corrections proposed by the Committee, and before the student’s graduation declaration, the approved master’s thesis shall be deposited electronically with the University of the Aegean Library through the Library’s online Portal and published on the website of the School concerned. An electronic copy shall be submitted to the Programme Secretariat.
If the thesis is assessed negatively, it may be resubmitted after two months, provided the postgraduate student revises it in accordance with the Committee’s comments. If the second submission is also assessed negatively, the postgraduate student shall not be eligible for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma.
Article 12. Internship
Postgraduate students may undertake an internship in accordance with their Curriculum and the applicable legislation.
The internship shall be coordinated by the Programme’s Internship Coordinator, appointed by decision of the SC.
The internship shall take place either in Greece or abroad, in professional bodies, creative industries, technology companies, research institutions or academic institutions.

Degree grade = Σ(grade of each course or graded educational activity × ECTS credits) / 120, provided that this method of calculation is stipulated in the regulations of the Institution awarding the degree.
Article 14. Programme Evaluation
At the end of each semester, postgraduate students shall evaluate each course and each instructor. In accordance with the Institution’s internal quality assurance system, students shall evaluate each course as a whole upon its completion, in terms of content, teaching method, recommended textbooks, etc.
The Institution has established the following procedure for regular internal and external evaluation: upon completion of each course, students evaluate the course as a whole in terms of content, teaching method and recommended textbooks through the quality assurance information system of the University of the Aegean’s Quality Assurance Unit. Under this procedure, students receive an email listing the courses for which they have registered in the current semester. Each course is linked to a course evaluation questionnaire. Student questionnaires are collected and managed in a modern, user-friendly and secure electronic environment that ensures the necessary anonymity.
The Directors and all teaching staff of the University of the Aegean’s Postgraduate Studies Programmes have access to the information system, through which they receive ongoing information on the results of the electronic evaluation of their courses.
At regular intervals (e.g. every two or three years), and under the responsibility of the Programme Director, data shall be collected to enable comparison of the Programme’s curriculum and course content with those of corresponding postgraduate programmes offered by institutions in Greece and abroad known for their pioneering work.
The Programme shall also be evaluated as part of the periodic evaluation/accreditation of the academic unit by the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education. This shall include an overall assessment of the work undertaken by each postgraduate programme of the Department, the extent to which the objectives set at its establishment have been achieved, its sustainability, graduates’ integration into the labour market, its contribution to research, its internal evaluation by postgraduate students, the justification for continuing its operation, and other aspects of the quality of the work produced and its contribution to the national strategy for higher education (Article 87(1), Law 4957/2022).
